Description:

Patients: This phase II study involved 68 patients with non-small-cell lung cancer. The majority (75%) of patients were men. The median age was 61, ranging from 38 to 79 years old.

Treatment: All patients were treated with radiation therapy (thoracic conformal radiotherapy) and chemotherapy. They were given the chemotherapy drugs carboplatin and paclitaxel or carboplatin and gemcitabine.

Toxicity: Grade 5 gastrointestinal bleeding was reported in one patient being treated with carboplatin and gemcitabine. Grade 4 neutropenia was reported in both treatment groups, while grade 4 thrombocytopenia was reported in one patient being treated with carboplatin and gemcitabine. Grade 3 pulmonary toxicity, esophagitis, nausea, vomiting, and myalgia were also reported.

Results: The median overall survival was 24.3 months for patients treated with carboplatin and paclitaxel, and 12.5 months for those being treated with carboplatin and gemcitabine.

Support: Some researchers involved in this study have received research funding from Eli Lilly, Astra-Zeneca, and/or Sanofi-Aventis.
