Description:

Patients: This study involved 40 women with metastatic breast cancer. The median age was 58.5 years, ranging from 29 to 73. All women previously had anthracycline and taxane or vinorelbine treatment, along with a therapy for metastatic disease that contained trastuzumab.

Treatment: All women receive d the chemotherapy drugs capecitabine and trastuzumab.

Toxicity: Grade 3 diarrhea and hand-foot syndrome were reported in two and six patients, respectively. Grade 1 and 2 toxicities included neutropenia, anemia, diarrhea, and hand-foot syndrome.

Results: The median overall survival was 24 months, ranging from three to over 42 months.

Support: One study author received research funds from Amgen, AstraZeneca, and Novartis. Neither drug used in this study is marketed/manufactured by these companies.
