Description:

Patients:
This phase 2 study involved 49 metastatic colorectal cancer patients who had not been previously treated. The median patient age was 63.4 years and 76% were male.

Treatment:
Patients were treated with the chemotherapy agents capecitabine and oxaliplatin, and the biologic therapy agents bevacizumab (an angiogenesis inhibitor that interferes with tumor blood supply) and imatinib (a protein kinase inhibitor that interferes with cancer cell growth).

Toxicities:
The most severe toxicities were of grade 3 and included nerve toxicity, diarrhea, vomiting, and neutropenia.

Results:
The median overall survival was 23.2 months.
