Description:

Patients: This Phase III trial involved 731 patients with metastatic breast cancer. Patients were divided into three groups: Group A contained 245 patients, Group B contained 242 patients, and Group C contained 244 patients.

Treatment: Patients in Group A were administered the drug – doxorubicin (adriamycin). Patients in Group B were administered the drug – paclitaxel (taxol). Patients in Group C were administered the drugs – doxorubicin adriamycin) and paclitaxel (taxol).

Toxicity: 1.6% of patients in Group C (i.e. 4 patients) experienced “lethal toxicity.” Grade 3-4 toxicities included hematologic, infection, cardiac complications, neurologic complications, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomatitis.

Results: Median overall survival for patients in Group C was 22.4 months.
