Description:

Patients:
This study involved 68 patients with limited-stage small-cell lung cancer. The median age was 63, with a range of 39-86, and 44% were male.

Treatment:
Patients were given a combination of the chemotherapy agents tirapazamine, cisplatin, and etoposide, which cause DNA damage and cancer cell death. In addition, patients received thoracic radiotherapy.

Toxicities:
Two deaths were reported as a result of these treatments. One was due to disease progression and the other to pericardial effusion. The most common grade 3 and 4 toxicities were leucopenia, neutropenia, and dehydration.

Results:
The estimated median overall survival for this study was 21 months.
