Description:

Patients: This phase 2 study involved 107 patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma (kidney cancer). Their median age was 59, ranging from 29 to 80 years of age. These patients had previously received cytokine-based therapy.

Treatment: Patients were treated with sunitinib, either in the morning or at night, before sleep. Sunitinib is a biological therapy that affects a molecule called VEGF.

Toxicity: One grade 5 toxicity, acute myeloblastic leukemia, was reported. Six treatment-related grade 4 toxicites were reported: hematemesis, renal failure, vertigo, dehydration, hyponatremia, and hemorrhagic gastritis.

Results: The median overall survival was 19.8 months.
