Description:

Patients: This phase II trial involved 69 women with recurrent epithelial ovarian cancer. They ranged in age from 44 to 86 years of age. In the majority of these women, their cancer began in an ovary.

Treatment: Thirty-nine women were treated with topotecan alone, and thirty were treated with topotecan and thalidomide.

Toxicity: The most common grade 3/4 toxicities were hematological and included neutropenia, thrombocytopenia, and anemia. Neutropenia was the most common grade 3/4 toxicity, reported in 72% of women treated with topotecan alone and 87% of those treated with topotecan and thalidomide.

Results: The median overall survival was nineteen months for the women treated with both topotecan and thalidomide, and 15 months for those treated with topotecan alone.

Support: This research was supported by a grant from Celgene Corp., which markets thalidomide as THALOMID“.
