Description:

Patients:
This study involved patients with metastatic colorectal cancer who were divided into 3 separate treatment groups. Group A consisted of 156 patients with a median age of 69 years and 63% male. Group B had 157 patients with a median age of 67 years and 65% male. Group C had 158 patients with a median age of 67 years and 60% male.

Treatment:
Group A was treated with the chemotherapy agent capecitabine. Group B received capecitabine and the biologic therapy agent bevacizumab. Group C was treated with capecitabine, bevacizumab, and the chemotherapy agent mitomycin.

Toxicities:
One treatment-related death due to sepsis was reported for group A. Grade 3/4 diarrhea and hand-foot syndrome was also reported for this group.

There were 7 treatment-related deaths reported for group B. Causes included hemorrhage, myocarditis (inflammation of the heart), bowel perforation, and sepsis.

Three treatment-related deaths due to hemorrhage, pulmonary embolism, and neutropenic colitis were reported for group C.

Results:
The median overall survival was 18.9 months for groups A and B and 16.4 months for group C.
