Description:

Patients:
This phase 3 study involved non-small cell lung cancer patients who were divided into two separate treatment groups. Group A had 226 patients with a median age of 59.0 years and 58% were male. Group B consisted of 225 patients with a median age of 57.3 years and 62% male.

Treatment:
Patients in group A received chemotherapy with gemcitabine and cisplatin or carboplatin, and biologic therapy with erlotinib (an EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitor that interferes with cancer cell growth).

Patients in group B received chemotherapy with gemcitabine and cisplatin or carboplatin, and a placebo.

Toxicities:
Treatment-related deaths were reported for group A (causes included sepsis and kidney failure). Grade 4 vomiting and grade 3 skin reactions were also reported.

Treatment-related deaths were reported for group B (causes included gastroenteritis, sepsis, and respiratory problems). Grade 4 neutropenia and leucopenia were also reported.

Results:
The median overall survival rates for groups A and B were 18.3 and 15.2 months, respectively.
