Description:

Patients: This study involved 579 patients with stage IIIA-N2 non-small cell lung cancer. Of these, 74% were men and 26% were women. The median age was 61 years.

Treatment: All patients were given treatment with the chemotherapy drugs cisplatin or carboplatin in addition to at least one other drug. After chemotherapy, 167 had surgical resection and 165 had radiotherapy.

Toxicity: Grade 3/4 esophageal toxicity occurred in 1 patient, and grade 3/4 pulmonary toxic effects were observed in 5 patients. 11 patients had late pulmonary fibrosis and esophageal fibrosis occurred in 1 patient. One patient died of radiation pneumonitis.

Results: The median overall survival was 16.4 months for those receiving the surgical resection and 17.5 months for those receiving radiotherapy.
