Description:

Patients: This phase I/II study involved 20 patients with newly diagnosed glioblastoma. Their median age was 53.5, ranging from 33 to 67 years. There were twelve men and eight women in this study.

Treatment: Patients were treated with radiation therapy, the chemotherapy drug temozolomide and the biological therapy PTK787/ZK222584 (PTK/ZK), which targets a receptor called VEGFR.

Toxicity: Grade 3 or 4 toxicities included neutropenia, thrombocytopenia, fatigue, infection, and anemia (each reported in less than 20% of patients).

Results: The median overall survival was 17.3 months. During this study, the company developing the PTK/ZK drug ended the study early, as they did not see good results in a study of another type of cancer.
