Description:

Patients: This phase II study involved 55 women. The median age was 58, ranging from 27-82 years old. 67% of women estrogen receptor positive tumors and 49% had progesterone receptor positive tumors.

Treatment: Women were treated weekly with two chemotherapy drugs, paclitaxel and capecitabine.

Toxicity: The most common grade 3-4 events were hand-foot skin reactions and neutropenia, occuring in 18% and 13% of patients, respectively. Grade 1-2 toxicities observed in more than half of the women included fatigue, alopecia, and sensory neuropathy.

Results: The median survival time in this group of women was 17 months. The authors state that the treatment regimen 'provides an important option for patients in addition to the regimen of docetaxel and capecitabine for metastatic breast cancer'

Support: Two of the authors disclosed receiving an honoraria of less than $10,000 from Roche, which makes capecitabine.
