Description:

Patients:
This phase 3 study involved castration-resistant prostate cancer patients with bone metastases who were divided into two groups based on prior treatment. Group A had 352 patients with a median age of 68 years who had been previously treated with docetaxel. Group B had 262 patients with a median age of 74 years who were not previously treated with docetaxel.

Treatment:
Patients in groups A and B received radiation therapy with radium-223 dichloride.

Toxicities:
Treatment-related deaths due to unspecified causes were reported for group A. Grade 4 anemia, neutropenia, and fatigue were also reported.

Treatment-related deaths due to thrombocytopenia and other unspecified causes were reported for group B. Grade 4 anemia and fatigue were also reported.

Results:
The median overall survival rates for groups A and B were 14.4 and 16.1 months, respectively.
