Description:

Patients: This Phase II trial involved 30 patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma; 19 men and 11 women. The median age was 62. Seventeen patients had undergone a prior nephrectomy.

Treatment: The treatment consisted of a combination of interferon-alpha and thalidomide (thalomid).

Toxicity: One patient died during therapy of congestive heart failure and pulmonary edema. There was one grade 4 toxicity, gastrointestinal. Grade 3 toxicities included somnolence, neurosensory, central nervous system, pulmonary, gastrointestinal, anorexia, weakness, and rash.

Results: The median overall survival was 67.7 weeks (15.6 months).
