Description:

Patients:
This study involved 54 advanced urothelial tract carcinoma patients who had no previous chemotherapy. The median age was 63.6 years and 80% were male.

Treatment:
Patients were treated with a biologic therapy called gefitinib (an inhibitor of the epidermal growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase) as well as the chemotherapy agents gemcitabine and cisplatin.

Toxicities:
Deaths due to pulmonary embolism, gastrointestinal bleeding, and infection were reported. Grade 4 neutropenia, diarrhea, and fatigue also occurred.

Results:
The median survival time was 15.1 months
