Description:

Patients: This phase II study involved 33 women with taxane resistant metastatic breast cancer. The median age was 56 years, ranging from 35-68. All patients had previously received a chemotherapy treatment that included taxane.

Treatment: All patients were treated with the chemotherapy drugs cisplatin and gemcitabine.

Toxicity: Three patients reported grade 4 toxicities; leucopenia and thrombocytopenia. Grade 3 and 2 toxicities were leucopenia, thrombocytopenia, anemia and stomatitis/mucositis. Other grade 1 and 2 toxicities were peripheral neuropathy, renal dysfunction, and nausea/vomiting. All patients had alopecia that was reversible.

Results: The median survival was 15 months. The median time to progression was 7 months.
