Patients: 290 patients with colorectal cancer with metastases confined to the liver were involved in this study. Patients were divided into two groups: an intrahepatic treatment group composed of 145 patients and an intravenous group composed of 145 patients.

Treatment: For the intrahepatic group the treatment consisted of the administration of intrahepatic arterial (IHA) fluorouracil (adrucil) and folinic acid (leucovorin).

Toxicity: One patient died from gastrointestinal hemorrhage from a bleeding ulcer after receiving 15 cycles of IHA therapy. Grade 3 or 4 toxicities were rare and included: nausea, vomiting, anorexia, stomatitis, and diarrhea.

Results: Median overall survival was 14.7 months.
