Description:

Patients:
This phase 2 study involved advanced urothelial carcinoma patients who were divided into two separate treatment groups. Group A consisted of 28 patients with a median age of 65.8 years and 82% were male. Group B had 60 patients with a median age of 60.9 years and 77% were male.

Treatment:
Patients in group A were treated with the chemotherapy agents gemcitabine and cisplatin.
Patients in group B received gemcitabine and cisplatin chemotherapy along with biologic therapy with cetuximab.

Toxicities:
The most severe toxicities in group A were of grade 4 and included neutropenia, thrombocytopenia, and leukopenia.

Treatment-related deaths due to respiratory failure, sudden death, and heart attack were reported for group B. Grade 4 rash and neutropenia were also reported.

Results:
The median overall survival rates for groups A and B were 17.4 and 14.3 months, respectively.
