Description:

Patients:
This phase 2 study involved 82 malignant pleural mesothelioma patients who had not received prior chemotherapy. The median patient age was 55 years and 67.1% were male.

Treatment:
Patients were treated with the chemotherapy agent cisplatin and the biologic therapy agent called bortezomib, which is a proteasome inhibitor that causes cancer cell death.

Toxicities:
There were two treatment-related deaths due to lung inflammation and heart attack. Grade 4 pain and nerve toxicity were also reported.

Results:
The median overall survival was 13.5 months.
