Description:

Patients: This Phase II study involved 120 patients with advanced non-small-cell lung cancer. The patients were randomly divided into two groups. Group A had 60 patients (53 men, 7 women, median age 64).

Treatment: Treatment consisted of two chemotherapeutic agents: vinorelbine and cisplatin. In addition, Group A patients received a transdermal nitroglycerin patch.

Toxicity: Grade 3-4 toxicities included leukopenia, neutropenia, nausea, vomiting, and anorexia.

Results: The median overall survival was 413 days (13.5 months) for Group A and 289 days (9.5 months) for Group B. More partial responses were observed among Group A patients (42) compared to Group B patients (24). The authors concluded, "Use of nitroglycerin combined with vinorelbine and cisplatin may improve overall response and
time-to-progression in patients with stage IIIB/IV NSCLC."
