Description:

Patients: This phase II study involved 14 women with treatment-refractory metastatic breast cancer. The median age was 58, ranging from 40-90 years. The majority were Caucasian/white (92.9%) and the rest were Hispanic. All had been treated with 2 or more chemotherapy drugs before being in this study.

Treatment: Women were treated with perillyl alcohol (NSC 641066), which is a naturally occurring agent. How it fights cancer is not entirely understood.

Toxicities: Grade 4 dyspnea and pulmonary toxicity were reported. Ten patients reported grade 3 pain. Grade 1 and 2 nausea, eructation, epigastric pain/discomfort, constipation, and diarrhea were reported by most patients.

Results: The median overall survival was 12.8 months (389 days). The researchers stopped more patients from entering the study since the treatment did not result in a very good response in these patients, and they did not tolerate the drug very well.
