Description:

Patients:
This phase 2 study involved recurrent malignant glioma patients who were separated into different groups based on the specific type of cancer they had. There were 14 patients with anaplastic astrocytoma in group A who had a median age of 48.5 years and 85.7% were male. Group B consisted of 16 glioblastoma patients with a median age of 57.5 years and 62.5% were male.

Treatment:
Patients in groups A and B were treated with the biologic therapy agent sunitinib, which is a tyrosine kinase inhibitor that interferes with cancer cell growth.

Toxicities:
There was one grade 5 adverse event reported for group A, which was reported as death due to disease progression. Grade 4 neutropenia and grade 3 fatigue and hand-foot syndrome were also reported.

The most severe toxicities reported in group B were of grade 4 and included neutropenia and thrombocytopenia. Grade 3 fatigue was also reported.

Results:
The median overall survival times for groups A and B were 12.1 and 12.6 months, respectively.
