Description:

Patients: This phase II study involved 71 women with metastatic breast cancer. They all had disease progression after being treated with anthracycline-based therapy. The median age was 55, ranging from 28 to 72 years. The majority (61%) were post-menopausal.

Treatment: Patients were treated with the chemotherapy drugs docetaxel and ifosfamide.

Toxicity: One patient died from liver failure and encephalopathy. She had multiple liver metastases. Leukopenia, neutropenia, and anemia were the most common grade 3 and 4 toxicities. There was one grade 4 neurological/CNS toxicity reported. Other toxicities included thrombocytopenia (grade 2 and lower), nausea and vomiting, alopecia, mucositis, and diarrhea.

Results: The median overall survival was 12 months.
