Description:

Patients: Thirty-seven patients with locally advanced rectal carcinoma were enrolled in this Phase I/II protocol.

Treatment: Treatment consisted of three-dimensionally planned boost radiotherapy with venous infusion of 5-FU (adrucil) chemotherapy, surgery, and postoperative 5-FU/leucovorin.

Toxicity: Acute toxicity was often substantial. Nine of 37 patients experienced grade 3 or 4 toxicities. Toxicities included: proctitis, and small bowel adverse reactions (i.e. ilieus, obstruction, enteritis).

Results: Overall 3 years survival (actuarial) was 82% +/- 7%.
