Description:

Patients: This Phase III study involved 187 assessable patients with colon cancer (staged T3 or T4). Patients were divided into two groups. Group 1 comprised 93 patients and Group 2 comprised 94 patients.

Treatment: Group 1 received surgery (complete resection) and chemotherapy comprised of fluorouracil (adrucil) and levamisole (ergamisol). Group 2 received surgery (complete resection) and chemotherapy (fluorouracil and levamisole) plus radiotherapy.

Toxicity: There were two treatment related deaths; one in Group 1 (sepsis) and one in Group 2 (liver failure). For both groups, other toxicities (grade 3 and above) included hematologic, diarrhea, nausea, stomatitis, vomiting, skin, and lethargy.

Results: Overall survival at 5 years was 62% for patients in Group 1 and 58% for patients in Group 2.
