Description:

Patients: This study involved 32 patients with advanced breast cancer.

Treatment: The treatment consisted of immunotherapy - interleukin-2 and G-CSF in combination with three chemotherapy drugs - carboplatin (paraplatin), thiotepa (thioplex), and cyclophosphamide (cytoxan). Some patients received interleukin-2 alone or in combination with G-CSF.

Toxicity: All patients experienced grade 1 to 2 toxicity in the form of flu-like symptoms including fever, chills, nausea and vomiting, and lightheadedness. Other toxicities included hypoxia and dyspnea. One patient had a grade 3 toxicity.

Results: Overall survival was not discussed but the authors stated that there was no statistical significance for overall survival favoring the patients who received interleukin-2 plus G-CSF over the patients receiving G-CSF only.

Support: This study was supported in part by a research grant from Amgen Clinical Research Division. Amgen markets interleukin-2.
