Description:

Patients: This phase I study involved 30 patients with various metastatic cancers. The patients were divided into three groups.

Group C had five patients (one man, four women) with advanced metastatic colon cancer. The median age was 70. None of the patients received chemotherapy or radiotherapy prior to treatment.

Treatment: Patients in Group C were treated with one chemotherapeutic agent: 5-fluorouracil with folinic acid. In addition, hyaluronan (HA) was concurrently administered. Hyaluronan is a large, naturally occurring polysaccharide that can help target antitumor drugs to cancerous tissues in previous studies.

Toxicity: In Group C, 5-FU/FA-only and 5-FU/FA+HA treatments resulted in grade 1-4 dehydration and constipation. Grade 1-4 mucositis was observed with 5-FU/FA-only treatment, and grade 1-4 pain was observed with 5-FU/FA+HA treatment. No grade 3-4 hematological toxicities were observed. Furthermore, 5-FU/FA+HA treatment resulted in eliminating grade 1-2 leukopenia.

Results: The authors conclude that co-administering HA does not alter the effectiveness of any anticancer drugs.
