Description:

Patients: This study involved 291 patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (liver cancer). The majority of patients were men, and the average age of these patients was 63 years old.

Treatment: Patients were treated with transarterial chemoemobolization (TACE) and radiofrequency ablation (RFA) or TACE alone or RFA alone. TACE is a chemotherapy-delivery method, where cisplatin and lipiodol are given during a surgical procedure. RFA is radiation treatment.

Toxicity: Five deaths occurred that were related to treatment. Three of these patients died of liver failure, one patient died from a rupture of a vein in the esophagus (a esophagogastric varice), and one patient died from gastrointestinal bleeding. The most common toxicities were fever and pain.

Results: The median overall survival of patients treated with the transarterial chemoemobilization and radiofrequency ablation (TACE-RFA) was 37 months. The median overall survival of patients treated with TACE alone was 24 months, and for those treated with RFA only, the median overall survival was 22 months.
